The Shadow Work Guide

What Is the Inner Critic?

The voice in your head that isn't actually yours โ€” and how to stop mistaking it for the truth

The inner critic is the voice in your head that evaluates, judges, and criticizes โ€” and it's harsher than anything anyone else has ever said to you. It tells you you're not enough, you're too much, you're going to fail, you don't deserve what you want.

This voice feels like yours, but it isn't โ€” at least, it didn't start that way. The inner critic is an internalized version of the external voices that shaped your shadow in the first place: parents who withheld approval, teachers who shamed, peers who mocked, a culture that told you which parts of yourself were welcome and which weren't.

In shadow work terms, the inner critic is the shadow's enforcer โ€” the part of you that keeps the repressed material repressed by punishing you every time you get close to expressing it.

How the Inner Critic Works

The inner critic operates through three mechanisms:

Bradshaw's Method for Working with the Inner Critic

John Bradshaw, in his contribution to the Jungian anthology Meeting the Shadow, outlined a three-step method:

  1. Track it. Catch the critic in real time. Write down exactly what it says, when it appears, and whose voice it sounds like.
  2. Challenge it. Answer the content of the voice โ€” both emotionally and logically. Translate generalizations into specifics: "You are selfish" becomes "I didn't want to do the dishes."
  3. Don't comply. Consciously choose not to follow the critic's instructions. The critic expects obedience. Refusal breaks the pattern.

The Shift

The goal isn't to silence the inner critic. It's to stop mistaking it for the truth. Once you see it as a recording โ€” an old program installed by someone else โ€” its power diminishes. It doesn't disappear, but it stops being the voice you believe.

"The worst thing about the inner critic isn't that it's harsh. It's that you mistake it for the truth."
